Bliss [~2000]

Bliss is the name of a photograph of a landscape in Napa County, California, east of Sonoma Valley. It contains rolling green hills and a blue sky with stratocumulus and cirrus clouds. The image is used as the default computer wallpaper for the “Luna” theme in Windows XP.

The photograph was taken by the professional photographer Charles O’Rear, a resident of St. Helena in Napa County, for digital-design company HighTurn. O’Rear has also taken photographs of Napa Valley for the May 1979 National Geographic Magazine article Napa, Valley of the Vine.

O’Rear’s photograph inspired Windows XP’s US$ 200 million advertising campaign Yes you can.

world famous photo?
what a waste. This picture pretty much betrays the purpose of this site. How can someone compare it to the likes of, Winston Chruchill, Einstein, and other more worthy pictures.

I was liking this site. Now I know its just another blog.

Wierd, never knew that bliss was a real image, I always thought it was photoshopped.

I actually have one that has the same image with Master chief in a warthog shooting at a ghost, etc.

thanks

it’s not famous until you photoshop in a picture of a kitten. *rolls eyes*

I’m with Berry. I was really liking this site but there is too much mediocre “photo crap” in here or misinformation for me to want to explore this site further.

Why is the header of full of images of Anne Frank or the famous Eddie Adams execution photo vietnam and yet I can’t find them anywhere on the site? where are the photos of Dr. Martin Luther King? Where are there photos by Margaret Bourke White? Hell, let’s be cliche and put up a picture of John-John saluting his father’s casket at JFK’s funeral. Or even the Beatles’ Abbey Road cover photo.

I can understand the “famousness” of this photo in the context of modern pop culture and its popularity on web forums but as for historical significance, this photo doesn’t have leg to stand on.

What are you talking about!!!

This photo isn’t famous like the other ones.
Because popularity of this photo depends on a PC that we have to use…
It hasn’t got an unbelievable scene or tales etc…

This is famous, ok, but not like the others you put on this web…

The photos on your header, and the photos I came here to see are famous because their subject matter strikes something in you. The skills of the photographer aren’t what I’m debating, whether its a “good” or “bad” photo isn’t the issue. I think the issue is, is it famous for its content and does it have a story to tell or is it just another recognizable picture?

it’s certainly a world-famous photo, made so by Microsoft.

It’s just funny that Microsoft would use this innocuous, untouched photo of rolling grassy hills and blue sky, instead of something in some way generated or enhanced by computer. Perchance, running windows…

In a way, it shows how little confidence they have in their own software.

I think it’s quite informative - i didn’t know that that was a real photo (I thought it was a microsoft photoshopped image) so I would give kudo’s to the photographer - technically it’s a brilliant shot… even i it is all fluffy and pretty - not a journalistic / dramatic works.

This photo captures a moment in culture. Speaks volumes about us as a generation. and tells a story of what we could obtain. Whether we like it, or not is subjective and reflex more on the viewer. It’s compositionally sound and all design elements are skillfully addressed.

ps I’m typing this out on a Mac.

Okay so say you don’t like this picture, and you think it ruined the site. How so? Not all famous photos are dramatic, not all of them are so bloody and gory that you can’t even stand it. Just about all of these comments here were made by people who have seen the picture, therefore, how can it not be famous? That picture of Einstein is famous, and it’s a picture of him with his tongue out. It’s not as if his hand was chopped off and he’s in serious pain. It’s a happy, calming picture. Get over it.

I love this photo. It reminds me of a reoccurring dream where I’m running naked through a grassy hill under a blue sky with clouds floating lazily by. On my foot is stuck a brita water filter jug and my hand suddenly changes into an enchilada (verde) of which I began eating all the while unable to quench my thirst.
